First Semester: Jewish Leadership in Foreign Courts
Second Semester: A Tale of Two Prophets: Jeremiah and Ezekiel
Jewish Leaderhip in Foreign Courts: Exploring the Lives of Joseph, Daniel, Nehemiah and Mordechai/Esther. This course explores the fascinating and often overlooked role of "Court Jews" in Tanakh. Through comparing and contrasting narratives, we will seek to understand the factors that contributed to the rise of these Jewish leaders, the extent of their influence, and the diverse challenges they faced in navigating foreign courts. Our understanding of these stories will be enhanced through the study of Medieval and Modern commentaries that provide a historical and religious lens through which to interpret the thoughts, actions, and struggles of these outstanding individuals.

Joseph and His Brothers

Sibling relationships are fraught with challenges, and are central to the creation of a family. The first half of Sefer Breishit has several stories of families that did not make it, and the second half explores the successful story of the creation of the family, and thereby of the nation of Israel. A parallel development in Sefer Breishit is the role of Divine Providence, moving from explicit hashgacha to making more room for human initiative. These two developments collide in the dramatic story of Yosef and his brothers. In this course we will study the text carefully to understand the intense family dynamics, and the delicate interplay between hashgacha and free will in this seminal story in the creation of Am Yisrael.
