Through a careful reading of the opening chapters of Genesis we will discover that there is not one beginning but two, each reflecting a different conception of God, human beings, of their relationship, and more.
We are accustomed to saying things like "The Jewish view is…" or "According to Judaism…" and the like, as if there were one established and authoritative Jewish belief, worldview, and way of life. The truth, however, is that Judaism is a complex faith and religion which has always included a range of beliefs, worldviews, and norms of behavior – right from the opening chapters of the Bible whose complexities and contradictions we’ll examine in depth in this course.

We will approach Sefer Devarim through a philosophical lens focusing on the moral, political and theological aspects of the sefer. By comparing Devarim to other philosophical works, as well as differing philosophies within the Torah, we will gain an appreciation for the radical innovative philosophy presented in this sefer.
